Homemade Deodorant

I try to avoid antiperspirants, but still need a bit of deodorizing, especially during the Texas summer. I made some natural deodorant using this recipe from Bonzai Aphrodite.

1/3 cup Corn Starch
1/3 cup Baking Soda
10 drops of Antibacterial Essential Oil (I used lavender)
10 drops of Antifungal Essential Oil (I used eucalyptus)
2 tablespoons Vitamin E Oil
3 tablespoons Coconut Oil

Mix everything up in a bowl until it forms a thick paste. Transfer to your storage container and then allow 24 hours to ‘set up’.
I need to experiment with the amount of ingredients a little. Even after setting for 24 hours, it was still a little runnier than I would like. I've been storing it in the refrigerator to keep it solid.

Bedspread and Table Runner

I inherited an antique iron bed and bedspread from my grandmother, which we use in our guest bedroom. The bedspread was extra long, made so you could pull it up over the this

I never made the bed that way, instead I folded the top of the bedspread down a couple of times and put the pillows on top. I could tell this was confusing to guests and they never quite knew how to remake the bed.

This was one of those simple projects that once I finally got around to doing only took half an hour to complete. I just cut off the extra length from the top of the bedspread and hemmed the edge.

I was deciding what to do with the fabric I cut off, not wanting to waste such a pretty textile, and realized it was the perfect length and width for a table runner; it even had tasseled fringe on both ends. I just hemmed the edge and it was ready for the table. I solved a problem and got a new table runner as a bonus!

Please Knock...Baby Sleeping

My friend Jenn gave me this sweet alphabet embroidery sampler pattern for Christmas:

I haven't attempted the full sampler yet, but used some of the designs to create an embroidered sign for the front door.

I sized the pattern down to 45% of the original size, for the word "knock." Since it was so much smaller than the original, I couldn't use all the recommended stitches, so I ended up using satin stitch for many of the letters. The rest of the words were done with back stitch.

Zach dug the frame out of a dumpster about 5 years ago, one of his favorite hobbies when we were still living in an apartment.

Halfway There!

To track baby's progress, I've been taking a monthly photo. Zach even got in on the action.

20 weeks

Here's how baby's grown during the first 5 months:

Nutella and Sea Salt Stuffed Sugar Cookies

Zach had a bake sale at school, so I made a batch of Nutella and sea salt stuffed sugar cookies. They were delicious, I highly recommend.

Nursery Design and Projects

You knew they were projects. I have a million ideas but am limiting myself to one big project a month, which gives me time for about 5 projects before the baby comes. Notice this self-imposed limitation is on big projects, which allows me to cram in as many little projects as I have energy for.

So far, this is the design plan, and surprise surprise, it includes blue and green.

Currently on the project list:

Curtains- Sweet William fabric in Teal, lined with black-out fabric

Ottoman- Using Zig Zag fabric in Village Green and the Gum Drop ottoman pattern by Amy Butler

aletafae sells something similar in her etsy shop

Crib skirt- using the same chevron fabric as the ottoman and teal pom-pom trim

Changing table- fix up a craigslist dresser

If time allows, I'll probably do some more embroidery and sewing projects, one of which I'll share with you soon!

Pink or Blue?

Tomorrow we have our first ultrasound, and if baby cooperates we'll find out the gender. What do you think...

Forest Friends Mobile

I recently made a baby mobile for a friend, to go with her woodland themed nursery.

The animals are made mostly of wool-blend felt, with a few hand embroidered details.

I also made a second owl, to hang from the car seat.
